THE BENEFITS OF
FEEDING ALFALFA PELLETS AND CHUNKS TO SHEEP
Dehydrated Alfalfa is nature's
richest source of vitamins, minerals, quality protein and unidentified growth factors.
Supplementing ewe rations will help increase daily gain and feed efficiency.
Successful sheep production on
range land is dependent upon maximum utilization of range forage. Often the supply of
range forage is limited and the quality too low to maintain body weight. Range forage
supplemented with dehydrated alfalfa is 4.4% more digestible. Feed intake of range forage
increased 11.4% when supplemented with dehydrated alfalfa. Because of increase
digestibility and intake of the range forage, and because of the nutrient combination of
the dehydrated alfalfa, better performance will be obtained.
The nutrition of an ewe during
pregnancy and lactation not only influences her immediate wool production, but also the
potential wool output of her progeny. Feeding dehydrated alfalfa will result in
increased feed intake and, therefore, more wool production.
Feeding Directions:
- Lambs must be brought up to full feed before these rations
can be self fed.
- The corn and the dehy pellets must be nixed well. This
is a high-energy ration. The "roughness" factor in the dehy may not be
adequate to prevent digestive disturbances in the lambs. A small amount of loose hay
may need to be fed with rations 1 and 3.
- These rations are designed for self-feeding but may be
hand-fed or feeder wagon-fed once or twice daily
- Vaccination for enterotoxemia may be beneficial if these
high energy rations are fed.
